Museum on Wheels arrives at Coimbatore

Museum on Wheels, an initiative by the Department of Museums where a bus with various museum artefacts will travel to various cities, reached Coimbatore on Monday.COIMBATORE: ‘Museum on Wheels’, a bus carrying 35 display cases full of artefacts and exhibits from the fields of archaeology, anthropology, zoology, numismatics and art, arrived at the city on Monday. For the next two weeks, it is set to tour schools and colleges in the district.
The bus, an initiative of the department of museums, is meant for creating awareness about museums among students, according to officials.
C Sivakumar, curator of the Coimbatore Government Museum, said the exhibits in the bus had been modelled on the different sections at the Government Museum in Chennai.
“The bus has models, miniatures and also some original pieces from the museum along with descriptions. There are exhibits on stone, metal and wood sculptures based on the galleries of Chennai Museum,” said Sivakumar.
The bus also has information panels on the making of bronze idols and their iconography. “There are also panels on numismatics, on Sangam age coins and tools used by ancient people. Students can also know about tribes of the state and contemporary art,” he said.
The bus would be of great help to students in rural area who could not visit museums. “We are planning to tour the whole stretch of the Mettupalayam Road and visit schools there,” he said. This was the third time the mobile museum is visiting the district, he added.

“Schools and colleges which want the bus to visit them can call us. We would arrange visits to their campus,” said Sivakumar.
